David Weinstein had spent nearly three decades in the sunglasses business when he started Blue Planet in 2009. He had seen how much material frame factories threw away, so he built a new line from recycled plastics, reclaimed metals, bamboo and wood.
David passed away three years later. His son Matt took over, and Matt and his wife Lisa, the company's CEO, still run it today.
VISUALIZE CHANGE
In 2012 Matt worked at an orphanage in Africa and cared for his father through cancer. That year Blue Planet started Visualize Change: for every pair sold, it donates a pair of corrective glasses to someone in need.
More than 3 million pairs have been donated so far, through partners including SEE International, Direct Relief and the Best Day Foundation. The World Health Organization estimates that around 80% of visual impairment can be prevented or corrected, often with a simple pair of glasses.
TREES FOR THE FUTURE
Since January 2020, Blue Planet has planted one tree for every pair sold through Trees for the Future. The trees go into Forest Gardens, mostly in South America, Southeast Asia and Africa: fruit trees, hardwoods and food crops that give farming families food, feed, fuel and goods to sell.
Closer to home, the team volunteers every month through its Random Acts of Kindness program: beach cleanups, tree planting, Humane Society work, meals for people in need, and days out with kids with disabilities.
THE MAKE
Blue Planet's Eco-Process reuses 60–75% recycled and reprocessed material, leftovers that would otherwise go to landfills or the ocean. It makes a frame that is light, durable and comfortable. Many styles add walnut, zebra wood, beechwood or bamboo.
Every pair has Category 3 polarized lenses with 100% UVA/UVB protection, and comes with a woven drawstring case and cleaning cloth.
