HAWAII, BY WAY OF CALIFORNIA

Two roommates, one wet bikini

Rachael Leinaala Soares, a flight attendant, and Heather Aiu, a Kauai native, met in 2009 seeking roommates in California and connected over their Native Hawaiian roots.

Soares kept wanting one more swim before a flight, with nowhere to put a wet bikini. That was the whole idea. "Let's call it ALOHA," they decided, "because the world needs more aloha."

THE MAKE

Splash-Proof, then everything

It started with a single splash-proof bag and a Kickstarter that raised just over $6,000. They drove to their first trade show in Vegas.

The line now runs from Day Trippers to travel organizers to tiny pouches — all built on the same wipe-clean, quick-dry nylon.
